How to Measure for a Kilt
Follow these simple steps to provide accurate measurements for your kilt.
Accurate measurements are essential for a comfortable and well-fitted kilt. For the best results, stand naturally and have someone assist you when possible.
Measure Your Waist
Wrap a measuring tape around your natural waist (usually at navel level) where your kilt will sit. Keep the tape snug but not too tight. Stand straight, relax, and don't hold your breath. It's best to have someone assist you for accuracy.
Measure in inches.
Fell Measurement
The fell measurement is the distance from the waistband to the hip level where the pleats are sewn down. This ensures a proper fit around the seat area and helps maintain the shape of the kilt.
Measure in inches.
Measure Your Seat
Measure around the widest part of your hips or seat while wearing trousers. Keep your feet together and empty your pockets. Insert two fingers inside the tape for a comfortable fit. Again, having someone help will ensure an accurate measurement.
Measure in inches.
Measure Kilt Length
Measure from the top of your hip bone (at navel level) down to the middle of your kneecap. Stand straight with your feet slightly apart. Kilts are typically worn to the middle of the kneecap. Having someone assist will help get the correct length.
Measure in inches.
Measure Your Height
Remove your shoes and stand straight on a hard surface against a wall. Measure from your heel to the top of your head. A full height measurement helps confirm the correct kilt length.
Measure in feet and inches.
Choose Sett or Stripe
For Traditional Kilts Only
Sett Pleating: Shows the full tartan design in the pleats.
Stripe Pleating: Aligns the vertical stripes of the tartan at the center of each pleat.
The choice is yours! Traditionally, civilian kilts are pleated to the Sett, while military kilts are pleated to the Stripe.

For the most accurate fit, take all measurements carefully and measure in inches. Keep the measuring tape comfortable and avoid pulling it too tightly.
Neck Size
Measure around the base of your neck where the collar sits. Keep the tape snug but not tight.
Measure in inches.
Shoulder Width
Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other, across the upper back.
Measure in inches.
Chest Size
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the arms and across the shoulder blades. Keep the tape level and comfortable.
Measure in inches.
Sleeve Length
Measure from the top of the shoulder down to the wrist bone while keeping your arm relaxed.
Measure in inches.
Back Length
Measure from the base of the neck down to where you want the jacket to end.
Measure in inches.
Waist Size
Measure around your natural waistline, usually level with your navel. Keep the tape snug but not too tight.
